I worked at EMC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, some career mobility in operations (not much). Good hierarchical organization, generally. Good long-term business strategy. Job security very high if you are in a good department with healthy, non-toxic coworkers.

    Cons

Operations department is a shark tank. Departmental mismanagement, poor choice of lower and mid-level managers in some departments and business units. Extremely poor work-life balance for certain employees at the bottom of the operations totem pole. Very little sympathy for incurred health problems from high levels of induced stress on employees at the lowest levels. Some managers unresponsive to claims of workplace toxicity/co-worker toxicity and other HR issues. In certain jobs, very little insulation from retaliation for filing HR claims, despite policy against it. Very easy for toxic employees with personal agendas to make your job hard.

    Advice to Management

Hire more competent operations managers with real experience, not people who sell themselves well in an interview. Check their references and experience claims thoroughly. Good or bad managers make all the difference. If a manager changed management positions frequently either across departments or across companies within a small number of years, distrust them inherently. That's a sign that they are bad at their job and like to jump ship before their negative influences become too obvious or before employees start complaining too much.

Take claims of toxic co-workers from affected employees seriously. Toxic employees tend to sell themselves well to managers and are good at grabbing management's ear, especially if the managers are remote, but are abusive to other employees who are "out of the loop" and they damage productivity severely if they don't get their way all the time. If you want the highest productivity possible, take all claims of workplace toxicity seriously and don't dismiss them just because an accused person is favored by his/her managers.

    2. You get to learn a lot - specific to your department.
    3. Good environment - for work & play!

    Cons

    1. If you work very hard, you will be praised by your manager and that's all, no other benefits!
    2. Rare opportunities for Developers. Most people are into testing.
    3. Does not provide initial accommodation.
