I worked at EMC full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

I worked for EMC for just under 10 years and if you're a type A personality who takes initiative, the opportunities are virtually endless. You work with really smart people, all employees are respected and asked for feedback/new ideas, and competitive pay and benefits - often times people will look at the salary only, but EMC offers a lot of very robust benefits offerings that really round out a great package for employees.

Cons

While every company has it, politics is alive and well at EMC. Promotions and new job opportunities go to those who ask for them and seek them out. You certainly won't be just given a promotion or cool project just by being a hard worker.

Advice to Management

Face time is still critical at EMC - most high tech orgs these days have evolved past that and I would encourage EMC to try to do the same.

I worked at EMC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Comfortable salary. They offer work from home positions. Many locations, however they don't have the advantages of the good positions in all of them. They have good business sense, try to stay ahead of the curve, and are profitable. Very good place from a business/market stand point.

    Cons

Not a good place for growth. Too much politicking. Growth is usually only seen by those who do a lot of schmoozing, not by those who keep their nose to the grind and work hard. And they definitely work you hard and keep expecting more. When they are interested in new technology the just buy the company that already has it. This makes for a not so unified company. Even though the have the motto "one EMC" it feels more like every department is a separate company.

    Advice to Management

Need to have in house trainers that train specific to the position. Not just use the sales training for every position.

I have been working at EMC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There will be opportunities for people on the outside to come in and have a few good years. Fantastic people at EMC.

    Cons

The company is suffering mightily with the "Innovator's Dilemma" and spends more time on positioning its own products against one another than it does fighting the competition. EMC moved from Sales Kickoff being the big event each year to the Marketing Event dominating...relegating Sales to a "virtual" affair. Not a good sign, but inevitable. This is no different than any big and mature company.

    Advice to Management

Management is feasting on the remains. They have their places at the table and need no advice from those who haven't managed a spot for themselves.
