Pros

(Canada Branch) Small company with very high employee interaction with experienced senior management. Taking on responsibilities is encouraged and good employees are rewarded. Career advancement is not limited. Work life balance is respected. As a small company they won't be able to offer some of the most flexible benefits out there, but this is definitely made up in the way they treat employees, allow time off for personal days, allow time off for emergencies, etc. Because the company is not shareholder driven, most of the pressures are not present as you would find with many larger organizations. As it is a small company, you get a very wide range of experience. As a specialist insurer, you understand your products and business very well in a short period of time. Honesty and integrity are at the fore. Fun, relaxed environment. No take home stress!

Cons

As there are only a few core products, the scope of work can be limited at times, however, this is made up in the rate at which you will learn the business of insurance. Not a large company, some of the bells and whistles aren't present.

Advice to Management

Keep a record of promises made to employees. Don't break that psychological contract formed at the beginning by not delivering on promises due to circumstances and your small size/business demands. If you can't keep a promise, then sit with the employee and state why and discuss options.

    Pros

Most staff in organisation friendly and helpful (although not the same in more senior levels).

    Cons

Little or no prospects in marketing/communications for anyone with career aspirations. Now into fifth year of endless reorganisations of this area. What in theory is an attractive company to work for in marketing/comms is offset by drift, lack of priorities, knee jerk reactions to events and failure to manage the whims of senior execs made worse by an apparent belief that marketing is somehow inferior to PR. If you work there you end up undermined and undervalued and drained of confidence.
For the wider organisation there is a commitment to service and expertise which is attractive and positive if you are in insurance technical roles or customer service. Scores here mainly driven by marcomms not wider company.

    Advice to Management

Sadly management don’t trust the expertise of staff, preferring to spend tens of thousands on unnecessary agencies to do what staff could do rather than use agencies to support staff. Indeed, there is no trust in the experience and expertise of internal staff with a preference to pushing out skilled staff in case they might challenge the senior management. Basic planning and prioritisation simply eludes the management.

I worked at Ecclesiastical Insurance Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Generous salary & benefits, generous and friendly colleagues, really good genuine people who are talented and professional. You will have a laugh and be welcomed and taken care of. The customers are loyal and among our customers the brand is very well respected. You can learn a lot as there is a lot of expertise built up in the company over many years. It's a good place to spend you last few years before you retire as theres not a lot of pressure and it's a very easy going company.

    Cons

It's a very slow pace of work, there is not a lot of excitement on a day to day basis. it's generally assumed that nothing will ever change and that change is dangerous or unnecessary. The company is both professional and risk-adverse to a fault. Limited or no social life with colleagues outside of work. A lot of my colleagues used to talk about their final salary pensions and the countdown to retirement.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on the values and cut loose of anything that gets in the way....e.g. extremely bureaucratic processes. Look at individual team productivity in great detail and you will find a huge discrepancy in performance between the top and bottom - some teams get away with doing nothing and others are burning themselves out carrying the rest.
