"Generally good employer in terms of diversity and environment, but poor senior management and decision making, low pay."

I have been working at Elsevier full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great diversity in employees and people working there, good opportunities as many office locations, creative and innovative people, high quality brands.

    Cons

Poor salary, hard work was rarely rewarded, talented staff often left and less talented staff promoted, poor decision making at senior management level (e.g. rushed office moves, risky acquisitions). A lot of bureaucracy in the shared services and their inability to take responsibility for business decisions.

    Advice to Management

Start valuing your staff and get a proper salary review.

    "Managing Editor in U.S."

    I worked at Elsevier full-time

    Pros

Very good benefits -- 401K company match, we even had a pension (now gone), and health insurance options at reasonable contribution rates. Pay was good overall in the past, but then the annual raises were so tiny they essentially stopped.

    Cons

Elsevier, as the parent company, did not understand what we were doing in our small division. They therefore ignored us and did not provide the resources we needed to produce our publications. We had repeated layoffs, leaving behind a skeleton crew, and then they sold us to a company that appears to be even worse (cheaper!)

    Advice to Management

Take the time to find out what all of your divisions are doing, and then provide what they need in terms of basic resources. Don't demand large profit margins from a division that is severely understaffed.
