I worked at Emory University full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

It gives you lots of experience and they have a good reputation.

Cons

The culture is one that puts alot of pressure on students, faculty and staff.
It is very HR heavy. Nobody is encouraged to solve problems before they escalate, so folks always run to HR putting strain on the environment.

Advice to Management

empower your people.
acknowlege folks even if they are below your title.
senior management needs to communicate more when changes take place. Often staff is left in the dark when changes happen.
Senior management also needs to make decisions and stand by them even when something is unpleasant.

I worked at Emory University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Emory is filled with a diverse palate of wonderful people who really do good work for the university and in their lives. Of course there are "bastions of insanity" but there are also very good departments within the division of campus life and outside of it.

    Cons

As much as Emory touted their belief in life/work balance, there are several managers who do not believe in that. Even working from home one day a week, or trying to work a compressed work schedule ( in a non busy season) was frowned up. That sort of inflexibility and an unwillingness to meet their needs of their employees is tough to take! While there are always a few positions that won't be able to share in such options, it would be nice if managers tried to fight for their employees needs and found ways to meet them halfway. This would boost morale.

    Advice to Management

While there are always a few positions that won't be able to share in work/life balance options, it would be nice if managers tried to fight for their employees needs and found ways to meet them halfway.- especially when these are the same people who work their tails off during the academic year! This would boost morale and make Emory a great place to work again.
