I have been working at Energy Curtailment Specialists full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

I was working with a temp. agency in Buffalo and they found me a job opportunity at ECS. I hadn't heard of the company, so I immediately went on glassdoor and other job review sites to see what people were saying about it. After reading what people had said on glassdoor in particular...i was very hesitiant and totally put off by the negative comments - but I took it with a grain of salt and went to the interview anyway to see for myself what ECS was all about (honestly I was not very invested in it, but I couldnt afford to be picky at the time)

My paradigm shifted completely after coming here for the interview. I am so so glad that I didn't pass this up. Nice people, casual culture. Owners and HR really make a good effort to make sure employees are happy. For example:

- Short days before holidays - they dismiss everyone a few hours early
- There was an all paid for company picnic at Darien Lake with lots of food & prizes
- You can wear jeans to work - super casual and comfortable atmosphere
- Lloyds taco truck comes every wednesday during lunch hours (i think we are getting another one soon too)
- Christmas bonuses and other financial incentives (Lots of raffles and prizes within departments)
- Hard work is recognized by management - people can move up within the company quickly. It has happened for myself and some of my colleagues..it can happen for anybody who puts in a noticeable effort.
- Company is growing more and more and many good & exciting changes are being made

Cons

- Only 30 mins alloted for lunch - kind of rushed
- The growth & transition period means a lot of restructuring - things tend to get lost in the shuffle
- Lack of fluidity/ communication between departments can be frustrating
- The casual atmosphere isn't always a good thing. People need more training and focus / direction within their roles at the company

Advice to Management

- Be leaders and recognize what truly motivates. It takes more than telling someone what to do to and paying them for it to inspire them to work hard and improve themselves
- Organization skills and time management - busy times mean things can fall off the table. Dedicate time to what is truly important & prioritize accordingly
- Set an example for your workers by doing what you say you will do (dwysywd). If it doesnt get done, acknowledge that and take responsibility
- Communication skills - it flows both ways. Encourage employees to seek guidance when questions or issues arise - sugarcoating or ignoring things that arent going well means that potential problems won't get fixed. There can be no excuses if a problem is put on the table as soon as it arises
- Seek criticism from your employees. Get honest, anonymous feedback and do what you can to change the things that are hindering your (and their) progress
