Pros

Company generally has low stress environment and is generally flexible with its hours. Offers full time salary position over hourly/contract positions.

Cons

Now on to the cons; this company is riddled with avoidable problems and preventable mistakes: The company is severely underequipped to be tackling anything science. It almost feels like you're in an elementary school science lab where they just put you through the motions for fun. They lack basic glassware, to the point where you're hard pressed to find a glass beaker or flask. There is no autoclave and the pipettes are divvied out amongst the older employees, so you're constantly borrowing someone elses. Speaking of pipettes, many of them are not calibrated and the benches are often left in a huge mess of tools and samples with nobody cleaning up. Sanitation may be an issue, as biohazard is handled in a casual manner and there isn't an actual autoclave for proper sterlization. Protocols are written out poorly and suggested changes to make them better with no inconvenience to the user are dismissed in an arrogant manner as if management thinks they know everything. This feeds back to lower level employees as managers then blame them for problems that could have been prevented if the nature of the protocol was fixed. My boss once tried to claim that a project took 6 hours instead of 3 because he couldn't tell that the email server was working on Eastern Standard Time instead of Pacific Standard Time. Don't set yourself up for blame and avoid working here. HR and upper management are very unprofessional; HR is almost never present (you're lucky to see them once a week) and upper management is not present to evaluate. Health benefits supposed to start after three months but there was no mention of it. High turnover rate is indicative of problems. Pay is marginally low average; but they'll try to tell you it's above average.

Pros

The owner is very enthusiastic about innovative science and is, at times, a blast to work for. He will keep you on your toes and keep you thinking outside the proverbial box. A major 'pro' for this company is that it's wide open, if you come up with a novel concept Enfold will give you the lab and resources to pursue it. I would give it four stars for the potential to make a big impact if your idea and personality are right.

Cons

Okay, now for the downside. Very very very little direction will be given - you are own your own. No timelines, no deadlines, and it often feels very unorganized. Unfortunately high employee turnover - for a small company this makes it difficult to complete projects in a timely manner. This job is best suited for PhD scientists with a few years industry experience who are comfortable working totally independently and managing multiple projects and employees. Be prepared to bounce from idea to idea, during my tenure management 'refocused' the company several times. I would not recommend this for BS or MS associates due to the lack of direction and oversight. Scientific equipment is old and breaks down weekly - this makes it difficult to do even basic analysis like 260/280 for DNA or even Bradfords.
