I have been working at Equinox Fitness as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

- Best education anywhere. Reveals that most personal trainers have no idea what they're doing.
- Excellent network of professionals - colleagues and members
- Highly supportive and knowledgeable personal training managers

Cons

- 12+ hours / day, 5 or 6 days / week. There is great focus on getting to "full time" status of 21 sessions per week in order to increase your wage significantly. If you are new to training, doing this requires extended hours, many paid at minimum wage or not paid at all. You may often have clients spread out through the morning, afternoon and evening, which means that you are at the club through the entire day with many unpaid gaps in your schedule. The pay / session is better than other clubs but when you average it over the time you actually spend getting and maintaining clients and just being at the club the pay is diluted significantly. After 1+ years, it's easier to control your schedule and take time for yourself but the reality is that the extra activities to get more clients go on forever.
- Approximately 75% of trainers are NOT "full-time". This reflects on how challenging it can be to get there and stay there. It's absolutely achievable, but takes great focus and dedication.

Advice to Management

- Show that you care about the personal training teams - we are a massive sales team that brings Equinox literally hundreds of millions of dollars. Policies are enforced that feel stifling yet there is no evidence of reaching out to find out how to support us.

I have been working at Equinox Fitness full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

An Innovative, experience driven, high performance company. Equinox invests in it's employees, they consistently drive training and education, support growth from within and create a high energy culture that is addicting and almost impossible to leave. I'm grateful for the time spent in this company and still use the core principles and values they taught everyday.

    Cons

Not a company for someone who has trouble taking feedback, you will need thick skin.

This is a highly detailed, experience driven company. If you are not willing to put as much effort into your personal presentation as you are your work then do not apply. While this company will always support your growth with training and education, your personal presentation will be a factor just as much as your performance. I personally didn't mind dressing the part, but I watched it determine the fate of others.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to curb the gossip. Knowledge of company moves and decisions spread like wildfire and most of the time through senior management.

The delivery difference between senior managers was not consistent. Some directors made you want to work for them because they always worked for you. Others ruled with iron fists and made you want to run in the opposite direction.

The process improvement, performance management, education, training and incentives were challenging and motivating. The people are just as unique and state of the art as the clubs. The culture was addicting and competitive. Overall, it was always a positive and high energy environment to work in.
