A company that will win this industry
Software EngineerCurrent Employee, more than 1 yearSan Francisco, CAPros
A company that is focused and disciplined on progress. Extremely results oriented. Amazing people to work and learn from. So much product velocity as every team is shipping highly impactful features almost regularly. Open and honest environment with no BS. Equity will be worth something.
Cons
Last year has been challenging for tech industry overall. Ethos was extremely proactive in cutting when needed and now growing. Every company went through multiple RIFs but Ethos went out of its way to be transparent about it and generous to affected teammates. This is what is making us win now. All our competition is dying one after another while the team here is accelerating. Startups are hard and creating a successful one is even harder. So its not for everyone. I am glad we are one of the companies that will come out stronger from current downturn.

Pros
The average competency and intelligence in this company is substantially above any other company I've ever been at. At prior companies, i struggle to explain basic metrics and concepts to business people. At ethos, everyone just gets it which i was very surprised at. Everyone is super sharp, and is an amazing environment to learn from. Stakes are high for analytics team because major product & business decisions are taken from the analysis. This actually stresses me out sometimes, but it's better than in prior jobs where i will work on some analysis, only for the management to take a decision that was literally opposite of what i recommend.
Cons
Get ready to work hard and work fast. You better be smart and ready to go. the environment at ethos is that if you are not at the bar, you are out quickly. There's no prisoners taken here. I personally think this is a good thing, but i know it causes many people stress who are not ready for it.

Pros
Has some smart people and it's backed by reputable investors who won't let it fail. Most people are kind and will provide you support if you ask for it.
Cons
There's a lack of trust between teams and leadership tends to be either inexperienced--the founders are young and basically talking heads for the board--or overly aggressive. The whole tech org informally answers to the big personalities on Product, which constantly pushes changes that are ineffective or buggy. This creates busy work for engineers and does little to move the needle. Many folks are frustrated and stretched too thin, as well as afraid that their jobs will be off-shored to India. Four rounds of layoffs in the past year have also dealt a blow to company morale, and there has been a gradual trickle of employees leaving or searching for work. Change is inevitable in a startup, but for a company that's been around for more than 7 years, Ethos feels shockingly behind in terms of quality of leadership and technology.
