Current Employee - IT Department in Cambridge, East of England, England (UK)

    Pros

Location is good, and the campus facilities are excellent. The work is slow pace and based upon giving enough time to do the job right first time.
Salary is ok, benefits are london based.

    Cons

9 year contracts max (rolling 3 year terms) mean that promotion opportunities and career improvement are virtually non existant. If you join this company, expect to tread water for a few years and then get back into the real world.

    Advice to Management

Cross team promotions and advancement are missing. There is little or no motivation for members of staff to excel at what they do, as there will be nothing for their career to gain. Most employees treat this period of their working lives as a safe and cosy, low risk "time out" of their career.
You must start to motivate and reward hard work, and promotion within the company is a solid way to start.
Staff do not want to join a company, and be forced to leave after their 9 years are up, having made no advancement at all. It just doesn't look good on a CV.

I worked at European Bioinformatics Institute (Less than a year)

    Pros

One of the best places to work on cutting edge computational biology research. Great diversity and culture.

    Cons

A little bit isolated from the nearest city, Cambridge, but not much of a problem since they have a shuttle that runs very smoothly every day.
