Pros

Evidence Action's (EA) vision to indiscriminately provide opportunities to the underprivileged completely aligns with my goal in life. We all at EA are determined towards achieving our mission to provide the most efficient and cost-effective methods to improve their lives and standard of living. We are driven by these values and supported by our core strengths of fact based and evidence-based decisions. EA is completely different from other workplaces. People here are so focused on their targets and driven by the organization's values. The work environment is really professional with clearly defined responsibilities and targets. Work life balance is given equal importance. I admire the mission statement and the work culture. The work environment is really friendly and there is a lot to learn from the seniors. Also, the exposure is great as there is a lot of actual field work and meetings with highly designated government officials. All this helps me in my overall development as a professional and as a person in general. I have grown a lot as I said. The work environment allows you to be creative but also to be driven by facts at the same time. This is also how life is, in life also you take new decisions everyday but if they are informed decisions, the risk is less, and the fun is more! There are endless opportunities at EA. If you are also driven by similar values, EA is the place for you. Here you can imagine a great professional life, healthy work environment and above all the satisfaction of helping those who are in need and contribute towards making our country and the world a better place for the generations to come.

Cons

Pros

Evidence Action is a mission-driven organization that genuinely lives its values. The work is meaningful, impact-focused, and grounded in data, which makes it especially rewarding to be part of the team. Leadership is thoughtful and accessible, and there is a strong culture of trust, collaboration, and respect across teams. People here are smart, humble, and deeply committed to doing good work without ego. I’ve also appreciated the organization’s openness to learning and improvement—there is a real willingness to invest in systems, processes, and people to support long-term sustainability. Work-life balance is generally respected, especially considering the global nature of the work.

Cons

As with many fast-growing, mission-driven organizations, some processes and systems are still evolving. This can occasionally mean ambiguity, shifting priorities, or heavier workloads during peak periods. Cross-functional coordination can sometimes take extra time due to the organization’s scale and distributed teams.

Pros

Programs have real impact and are implemented by talented, committed local staff. Somewhat less top-down than many other NGOs. Colleagues are intelligent, mission-driven, and humble. No toxic personalities. Compensation and benefits are okay for the sector. Extremely flexible on hybrid work, with many remote employees.

Cons

The organizational structure is matrixed to the point of dysfunction. Decision-making is slow, consensus-heavy, and bogged down by politics. Senior leadership is reactive, shortsighted, and barely capable of making decisions only when something is in immediate crisis. They will spend literally months talking and planning in circles, without action. Direction is left incredibly vague, if not completely absent. Basic principles of management, planning, strategy, and leadership are foreign concepts. Clear inequities exist between global staff and local staff in terms of pay, titles, and promotion pathways. These disparities are well-known internally, but leadership is too paralyzed to address it. Promotions are a black box. Performance evaluations are completely subjective and determined exclusively by your direct supervisor, despite getting 360 input. The organization doesn’t apply its own values of rigor and objectivity to itself or its people. There’s zero accountability for senior leadership - they can (and do) perform poorly without repercussion. The organization clearly and consistently demonstrates that it doesn’t care about its people. “Our people are our best asset” is something you never hear here. Coaching is absent, learning tapers off after a year, feedback mechanisms are weak, and leadership shows little interest in genuinely engaging with staff perspectives. Layoffs and restructuring decisions have been handled poorly, with minimal communication or reflection (staff who have worked there for years have been laid off without warning for reasons that can be drawn back to senior leadership’s negligence, and they don’t even care enough to give them an exit interview).

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and reflections with us. We’re truly sorry to hear that your experience at Evidence Action left you feeling this way. While some of the concerns you raised are difficult to hear, they are important to us and we appreciate your honesty. We’re glad you highlighted the dedication of our teams and the strong sense of mission and collaboration across staff. We agree! Regarding your reflections on senior leadership, we do believe that our people are our greatest asset and apologize that it has not been highlighted. We are actively working to improve how we communicate priorities and changes across the organization – we’ve hosted several staff feedback sessions over the last couple of months to get to the root cause of our work culture. As Evidence Action has experienced a significant amount of change through this last year, our Global Leadership Team has made this a focus area, and we know it will take continued effort and transparency to rebuild trust where it’s been lost. We’re grateful for your contributions and the passion you brought to our mission. Feedback like yours is one of the ways we continue to learn, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors. - Evidence Action’s People and Culture Team
