I worked at FBL Financial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good cafeteria benefits plan
    Competitive salary
    Health insurance, sick leave
Employee wellness program and excellent fitness center facilities, instruction and coaching
Caring, team-oriented employees, seniority with high knowledge and skills

    Cons

Job and culture changes occurred with high management turnover at all levels in the company
Superficial differences seem to be seen as characteristics of employees with leadership ability or potential
Some management lacked the depth of understanding, leadership and management skills to be effective
Age discrimination was frequent and one employee proved it in lawsuit
Age discrimination was a factor in the 2009 lay offs, but the outsourcing of a department hid the high percentage of older employees let go
Support for employees who lost their jobs was low, no outplacement help

    Advice to Management

    Increase diversity
    Value consistency

  2. "Lower stress, lower pay"

    Pros

overall modest work hours, flexible, stress free, friendly, competent bosses, modest commute time if you live in the area, work/family balance

    Cons

Pay in the investment area below average. Career path unknown. 2% pay raises implemented in 2011, well after the worst of the recession. No bonus structure which further exasperates pay discrepancy.
