I worked at FDA as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    Funding for your research
Permanent federal jobs are great, if you can snag one
9 to 5 lifestyle for many people

    Cons

Impossible to transition from temporary/intern/postdoc to a permanent job
Focus on appearances and less on science
White Oak is overcrowded and will only get worse

    Advice to Management

Work on the process for younger scientists to come in and STAY in if they are high quality employees.

I have been working at FDA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

FDA has a strong mission to protect the public health. This ever changing mission now lends itself to working from home for many employees.

    Cons

Often at the mercy of Congress. Has become more political in the last 10-15 years. Many citizens don't respect what we do for this country. Salaries can lag the private sector.

    Advice to Management

Trust and empower your employees. The vast majority of federal workers want to do a good job. Don't put processes in place that punish those that are doing their job so as to prevent a very few from doing poor work.
