I have been working at FHLB Chicago full-time

Pros

The FHLBC is a great employer with amazing benefits. While the bank is small in employee size, it is huge in volume of clientele so you are exposed to many different facets of the mortgage banking industry. The salary is competitive with industry norms. However, the Benefits are unheard of... they pay for going back to school and getting your MBA and they also have a pension system for all full time employees. I didn't know places like this still existed.

Cons

As the bank's purpose is providing liquidity to the mortgage banking industry, you won't be exposed to other types of banking. As mortgage/wholesale banking isn't going anywhere though, this isn't really that horrible of a "con"...

I worked at FHLB Chicago full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This bank is slowly moving from an antiquated business model to a more modern, agile model. I believe that the management of this organization is dedicated to its member institutions and is trying very hard to maximize the Bank's value to them.

Nimble minds at the top have helped the Bank through the current financial crisis. It has a good relationship with its regulator, and is fighting hard to gain market share.

    Cons

While the Bank is dedicated to its members, it is unfortunately not as dedicated to its employees. Morale is consistently low. Employees on the whole (although certainly not everyone) feel that management is not genuinely concerned about them, their ideas, or their professional development.

There is an unfortunate measure of cronyism in the organization, which makes it difficult for those without friends in upper management to get ahead.

    Advice to Management

Happy people work harder. Spend more time listening to what your employees have to say. There are some very creative and hard-working individuals who are not being recognized, and it would be a shame to see them leave.

Also, I would suggest being less tolerant of bad behavior and silos. The organization needs to pull together and work as one organism to achieve its goals. Self-serving members of the organism create tension and slow progress. Considerably.
