Pros

1. Family/Work life balance.
-FM Global practices what it preaches with respect to promoting a well balanced work/family life. It allows for flexible working hours and management is very sympathetic when personal time is needed and requested.
2. Recognized leader in the market place.
-FM Global conducts its business uniquely in its market by relying heavily on engineering and research to generate profit and affect bottom line rather than simply relying on acturarial practices. This business model has proven to be highly effective and has dinstinguished the company from its competitors.
3. Comprehensive benefit package.
-In a time when companies are cutting back on benefits, FM Global has remained committed to providing the most comprehensive beneift package to its employees in the forms of good healthcare benefits, 6%-match of 401(k), pension, company-provided vehicles, and even a $250 "healthy living" credit that can be applied towards gym membership, yoga and aerobics classes.

Cons

1. Salary compensation at the lower part of the spectrum.
   - when compared to similar jobs at other companies in the same industry, FM Global's salary is ranked at the "lower end" of the salary range. This could be a difference of $10,000 to $15,000.
2. Team work not as promoted/practiced as it can be
   - emplyees tend to work individually and are responsible for individual performances only. although cooperation and coordination is routinely carried out to complete tasks/projects, it is, nevertheless, far from a working "team-oriented" environment in which empolyees would brainstorm, map out plans, be assigned areas of leadership, and complete a project which can forster team spirit and generate pride in the working environment.
3. Lack of oppotunity for individual creativity and initiative
-management is typically not supportive of creative solutions or initiatives that are outside of the company guidelines or processes. this environment is somewhat stiffling to those who thrives on providing solutions and meeting objectives through creativity.

Advice to Management

1. Foster better team work utilizing creativity among employees
2. Further adjust salary for CA and NY based employees who are faced with unparalleled rocketing housing prices so compensation will be equitable and relative to employees in other parts of the country.

I have been working at FM Global full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As repeated over and over internally by managers: "FM has great benefits and job security".

If you are an engineering working for the risk prevention department (field engineer), you will get an "unmatched" training to do your job, which is a great asset in the property risk management industry, making FM Global a great 'school'.

The risk management industry is really growing in western countries and FM Global is leading the pack on the engineering side with a lot of research and technical knowledge. If you are an engineer and this industry interests you, taking a first job after university at FM is a great opportunity to boost your technical skills.

If you want a 'secure job' in a remote location with scarce job opportunities, you can potentially become a 'resident field engineer' and service the industries around your area - you'd still have to be in the city for a few months in the start of your employment - for training purposes and for them to get to know you and to trust you.

    Cons

Brilliant young talent are pushed to merely comply with the FM way of doing things. It is a true talent extinguisher type of culture. No wonder why some many people are on medical leave - they are bored to the point of depression!

Management has no clue on how to respond to new generations' needs and the company keeps on losing capable and/or ambitious people who do not care about FM's 'standard answer to everything: be patient, we have great benefits and solid job security".

    Advice to Management

Don't expect people to simply 'stay' for the love of the cause - unless the FM brainwashing worked.
Be honest about the slow career advancement. Learn to listen to peoples' needs and be more accommodating on their personal career choices before regurgitating the head-office pre-made cool-aid and washing your hands of your employees concerns.

Be faster in recognizing employees good work even when this does not reflect in your 'numbers'. If salary increases are not possible, be creative (though call on FM's managerial culture!) on how to reward good work, options abound: day off, hotel stay, two-person diner paid for, spa, gift cards etc...
