Pros

For the most part great people. Some very very technically talented, experienced, smart people. They take care of their employees (excellent health care package, free lunch, stocked pantries, excellent work-life balance).

Cons

Promotions are based on tenure, rather than expertise, guts & glory, or accomplishments.
It's a big company and with that comes a lot of red tape and bureaucracy, making changes, even with the best of intent, is a challenge. Projects become stale over time, and the diversity of work can be limited (though this varies drastically by the team that you are in).

Advice to Management

Give your rising stars the opportunities to do just that: rise.
Allow employees to move around teams more easily.

"Keep reaching for the "next double".... good luck. Will be tough, especially with layoffs."

    Pros

Dont have to work very hard -- it wont effect your compensation anyway.

    Cons

Wont get paid very well, and will not be given much responsibility. That makes sure everyone is replaceable by college grads.

Management is inexperienced, all "home-grown" FactSetters. They really don't understand how to run a company -- as evidenced by the company strategy "the next double".

    Advice to Management

Managements strategy, the one they touted internally for years, is to "reach the next double"; meaning to double revenue. This is not a strategy, it's a goal.

My advice would be to try to come up with a real strategy. With recent layoffs, it seems like you might be off track from the "next double" strategy.

I have been working at FactSet full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I will say that the bulk of time spent at FactSet has been really good, up until a couple of years ago. It's far from being a torture chamber, and there is a lot camaraderie among mid-level folks and between diverse teams. I am a good observer and will say that some departments have been favored over others, insofar as layoff proceedings and business needs go. Free lunches and snacks are really nice, but watch your waistline. Outstanding health plan - the very best thing about the company.

    Cons

Too much offshore hiring, way too much. We need the jobs here in the US.

    Advice to Management

Don't lose your knowlege base, the long-term folks who are the operational heart of the company...
