Pros

Large system
Pays very well for local government
Robust internal training & education (work & non-work related)
Supports balanced work/personal life
Some Supervisors are outstanding & exceptional

Cons

Standard promotional caps once in a merit position, no matter how skilled/proven you are (in other words NEGOTIATE YOUR SALARY on 1st full time offer...salary ranges are listed on the website)
A lot of dead log employees who complain & whine more than work & grow (as with any company)
Sometimes communication across departments & programs is not consistent
Some supervisors should not be allowed to supervise themselves!

Advice to Management

I know its tough as a government entity, but get more lean! Push out people who are non-productive or completely negative and get in more of the enthused passionate people that are sprinkled throughout the departments.

    Pros

Easy to get a job. Jobs are generally very relaxed, as members of management are more concerned with their personal lives than their job, even while on the job. If you want a slack job with little merit based pay or promotions, working for the Fairfax County government is right for you.

    Cons

Members of management are more concerned with their personal lives than their job, even while on the job. Work is too relaxed and generally does not allow for personal growth, as it is very simple, methodical, and straight-forward

    Advice to Management

It might be best to cut a good portion of the workforce and institute merit-based pay. This way employees who produce would be rewarded and encouraged to work further, while the fat that often gets deposited in any county government could be cut.
