I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great leadership at the Divisional level and above. Good benefits if you are at the corporate level or above (District Manager or above).

    Cons

Only 2 paid holidays for Store Managers yet corporate and DM's get at least 7. Salaried Store Managers have to take 6 vacation days to get a full week off vs. office and DM's only have to take 5. Safety in stores in urban markets is lacking and store teams are frequently robbed due to this. Company LP mantra is that "60% or more of theft is caused by management or team members stealing." Most stores have single coverage for too long into the day due to payroll budgets (no security, no one to relieve you for bathroom breaks, etc.). Store team members are not put through a proper background check and criminals with police records have been hired which could put the whole team at risk. HR & Team Relations are consistently inconsistent on how to handle discipline / terminations.

    Advice to Management

Spend some money on technology to get the company/stores into the 21st century. Invest in the people so that they will care, turnover will go down, and theft will decrease. Get payroll off of $ on to activity based labor so the stores are not penalized when a Store Manager takes a vacation week, a vacation day, or a sick day.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I really liked the people I worked with. Most were helpful and caring to employees and customers alike.

    Cons

Not enough coverage during open hours, low pay, unsafe working conditions. The threat of robbery and retail fraud a daily concern. Managers alone for up to 5 hours at beginning of shifts.

    Advice to Management

Increase payroll to individual stores, so they can hire people to be in stores to help customers.
