I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Lots of interesting people to work with.
Great place to start a career at to gain experience.

Cons

The company has shifted from treating the employees well to treating them like numbers.
There used to be decent benefits and bonuses but those all get whittled away one by one over the years. There is now a review/raise system that offers no incentive to do any more work that what you can get away with. To move up in the company usually involves jumping departments multiple times. That's if you are not arbitrarily laid off in the meantime.
The company mission statement is 'To be a compelling place to work, shop and invest' and I really do not believe that it is any of those at this point.

Advice to Management

Don't treat your employees like a bottom line you can cut to make your margins look better.
Make the company be the mission statement. You can tell people all day long that's what the company is about, but if you don't actually practice it, the words just ring hollow to the people it is supposed to matter to.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Unlike convenience stores, you have the ILLUSION of safety.

    Cons

Horrible pay for associates and ASMs, severely understaffed (this place is by far the worst about staffing I've ever worked), notorious for locations in bad parts of cities (to get tax breaks), more notorious for robberies, no discounts, no benefits, no respect, rude customers, high load of responsibilities, no place to "move up" in the company...try other places to work.

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting corners, especially in terms of store security. This is a company that only thrives during a bad economy.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits (Vacation, Sick/Family Leave, Insurance), Internal Promotion, Salary.

    Cons

Depending on the department, you may/may not receive encouragement/support from upper management. This was my case. I had wonderful teammates, but a crappy department director and DVP. There was constant criticism and a lack of support. Overall, the company is an awesome place to work, but you have to make sure you're in the department best suited for you.

    Advice to Management

Please make sure that team members are happy. That.Is.All.
