I worked at Farmers Insurance Group full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Having the opportunity to build and own your business but have corporate support and backing. That's huge, since your overhead is lowered. Also, their training is top notch. They are very dedicated to their agents, who always come first. If you like sales and business ownership, you'll build a great lasting career.

Cons

Upper management had a little rough patch, but I noticed that they've since hired new people to set the course straight again.

Advice to Management

Keep up the good work with weeding out the lame ones who don't make good decisions, and take care of the ones who do well.

I worked at Farmers Insurance Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are smart people, interesting work and decent medical/401k/pension benefits. There is a decent amount of free, self-paced training available at no cost. They will pay for tuition for a relevant course of study.

    Cons

Highly-political, constant churn, rapid changes in vision/direction, unclear "big picture". While there is much discussion and talk about the company's priorities, they are poorly communicated at the individual level in laymen's terms. Poor salary, unobtainable criterion to achieve 100% of target bonus. Uncompetitive amount of paid time off (vacation/sick days), and employees do not receive all federal paid holidays.

    Advice to Management

I would suggest a bigger focus on competitive compensation, employee retention and career development.

I have been working at Farmers Insurance Group as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pretty easy to get a contract job.

    Cons

Workload is high for the contractors, pay is low. Farmers take a lot of contractors to keep up with the deadlines, because their regular employees are unable to manage. A lot of the employees have been with the company for ages, management keeps transferring them from one department to another. Most of employees educational level is a high-school at the best, only managers have BA's. People are dissatisfied, but nobody say anything, because they are afraid to loose their jobs. Who would hire a 55 year old once a drop out of high-school, who has been promoted to a financial analyst position after 38 year with the company....
NO real HR department at the company. Managers do their own hiring based on their likes and dislikes, not on how good the employee is at what she/he does. And yes, managers do micromanage their employees since they hire dummies, they have no other choices..

    Advice to Management

Management does not hire smart people. They prefer low educated, quiet, non-confrontational workers, who would not question them. If you are a know it all attitude, ambitious young person, you will definitely be kicked out.
Favoritism is at its top: if you are a dummy but the hiring manager just likes you- have no worries, you will get a job.
