No opinion of CEO

I worked at Fastenal part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Great place to make local industrial connections; good entry level way to learn the ins and outs of a diverse sales environment; company will likely do well for a time because they force sales staff to rape the customer on pricing and pay next to nothing on national advertising (by relying on low-paid sales support to do sales calls on the promise of advancement)

Cons

Low wages; branch managers are poorly trained and often unqualified; promises of advancement depend on sucking-up to DMs, not on loyalty or performance

Advice to Management

Read between the lines when you see low numbers. Its not always the outside sales rep or floor staff...realize that the branch manager or even the district manager may be sitting on their rear-end and getting paid off of everyone else's hard work.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They tell you that you are your own boss and to run it like it's your business, not really true. The only pro is how much freedom the full time employees have.

    Cons

Micro-management, unreasonable goals, nothing is ever good enough, benefits are terrible, and vending machines.

    Advice to Management

If you paid your employees what they deserve instead of saying "If you want a raise go sell more" you may not have such a high turn-rate.

I worked at Fastenal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Fastenal School of Business-Training
Advancement Opportunity (due to high turnover)
Unpredictable days - always something new

    Cons

I took a failing store and doubled the sales the first year, then the 2nd year, but on the 3rd year the sales took a nose dive due to factory closings...and they fired me..via TEXT.
No loyalty to hard working employees.
Warped commission structure = NO Commission
    NO raises
Long hours doing everything from scrubbing toilets, unloading trucks, taking phone orders, picking orders, selling and delivering as General Mgr.
    Stores are grossly understaffed.

    Advice to Management

Loyalty to hard working employees, even in the lean months.
