I have been working at FedEx Ground full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay, generally. If you get a good route, you might be able to get done earlier than a 12 hour day

    Cons

Major stress. Lots of rules that you can get disqualified for. FedEx calls the shots even though they are not supposed to be the "employers" for the contractors. They force you to sign contracts that make you do more or they will terminate your contract while you have spent hundreds of thousands on the route and the vehicles to get in there. They can ruin you, and they know it.

    Advice to Management

Have accountability for yourselves as well. Very easy to point a finger at drivers in the trenches from your safe office. Get our packages on the trucks in a timely manner and load the trucks correctly. If you don't, take care of it or allow the contractors to fine you the same as you fine the contractors for every small thing!

I worked at FedEx Ground full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Generally, you work with people who want to do a good job. And, there is always work to do - you won't be bored! Educational benefits are great, health care benefits are acceptable.

    Cons

You might want to do a good job, but bureaucracy will get in the way of any process improvements you suggest. Generally, the initiatives that come down from senior management each year are good, but the company usually doesn't have enough people to fully complete them on schedule, or to scale/specs. If you keep your head down and do your work, then keep your improvement suggestions to yourself, you will do fine. Also, don't expect annual raises above 3% even if you are a star performer.

    Advice to Management

Break down the invisible barrier between you and the people who do the work - they have a lot of solutions you haven't thought of, and can save you time and money and help carry the company to much greater success, if only you could hear those ideas. Far more than you give them the ability to do, those people want to help you succeed - but between middle management fretting over their advancement opportunities and inaccessibility to actually make suggestions that reach you, they lose hope.
