I worked at Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Solid benefits, educational and training opportunities. Big company travel chances if you're in the right department. Pensions (whoa!) and a good 401k match.

Cons

Old world culture at all levels. For a large company, so many silos you'll never find your way out. Tough to get buy in for anything. Tougher to get cooperation and teamwork. Sense of privilege and lethargy. Overall, not a pleasant place to stay unless you just kind of resolve to go with the flow.

Advice to Management

Change is not a word that's ever really been embraced. Fiefdoms will always abound. You're not making the impact you think. You don't need to take a hard look at yourselves, you need to learn to work together. Take a look at Barney and learn how the kindergartners do it. Do real evaluations of employees. Make people work, contribute, and not coast.

I worked at Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco full-time

    Pros

The benefits are basically the only pro. The regular employees (non-management) are generally very nice.

    Cons

The LDP program is terrible in every way, shape and form. It does not promote leadership nor development. It's a year-long test in which they are evaluating the wrong things (such as how much you kiss up to management). They expect you to read their minds in terms of expectations and evaluate you on petty, non-important interactions rather than work product. For instance, if you don't talk enough to senior management during a social event, you could find yourself screwed. They don't value you or mentor you at all. In addition, if you are at all interested in banking or economics, it is definitely not the right program for you. It is solely concentrated within the support functions of the bank and they restrict you at every turn from apply to any jobs that deal with banking or economics. You can't even express an interest in these areas.

    Advice to Management

Really, it's not worth supplying. These are miserable people trying to impress other miserable people.

I have been working at Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco full-time

    Pros

Great benefits and excellent work life balance. Nice gym.

    Cons

Extremely slow to change and not very innovative. Not a good environment for someone who is motivated. Many employees generally lack ambition. Very hard to fire incompetent employees.

    Advice to Management

Only reward employees who deserve it.
