    Advice to Management

The training provided for Finish Line employees, especially those aspiring to management, must be standardized, consistent, and universally applicable in every store and every district.

Complex material is often taught only once, one on one, yet is expected to be retained without any opportunity to revisit the lesson accept in limited form (i.e. Training Modules). Providing simple, step by step breakdowns and clear definitions of nomenclature in the form of a Training Manual would eliminate this problem. It would also allow all staff members to review, at will, detailed information relevant to their business without reliance on colleagues or supervisors.

The Training Modules in current use provide only general descriptions of integral store policies or operations. This passes the burden on to the supervisor, or trainer, who can now behave as judge and jury in any matter of performance or policy. Without question, the current system creates misunderstanding and inconsistency in the implementation of company standards. With limited access to information, otherwise capable staff members cannot perform their duties with full confidence. Most importantly, when performance standards are allowed to remain inconsistent, and information is limited to a few, the career advancement of capable talent within Finish Line Inc. can be clearly defined by who, not what you know.
