Pros

Brilliant people solving a problem that will need solving, sooner or later. Not sure if it's now, though. Salaries used to be good, not so much any more. Work from home policies have generally been generous. Severance packages weren't terrible when they've had multiple rounds of layoffs.

Cons

CEO at this company is an absolute tyrant who can't work with anyone. Our org chart was hilariously topsy-turvy, with plenty of longevity for employees at the bottom but unable to keep anyone for more than a few months who was working directly under the CEO. The board actually required the CEO to get executive coaching because of how difficult he found it to get along with people in the way a CEO is expected to. The company's many changes of direction and inability to acquire customers regardless of cost comes directly from leadership problems at the top. If you are thinking of working here, know that anything you are told in the interview about the number of customers is probably a lie -- there are fewer than half a dozen total customers, and no real hope of getting more because the problem is largely theoretical at this time. Note: As of 3/24/2023, blanket NDAs for laid-off employees were ruled illegal by the NLRB. While Finite State may try to muzzle its laid-off personnel, this is no longer legal conduct and they have no legal recourse.

Pros

This is a good moment for Finite State -- the company has built out a smart, ambitious, experienced executive leadership team. Significant market opportunity. Strong staff-level talent in multiple departments. Finite State also has a meaningful mission -- a WHY behind what we're doing, and they make it part of the culture. The executive team really cares about getting that mission right. Leadership sets high expectations for staff, then trusts their judgment to get it done. That means lots of autonomy, and a welcoming environment for new ideas.

Cons

As the company is growing, it needs new ways to keep the different business units aligned behind the same goals. That will come with time and through managers who can translate strategic intent into consistent, company-wide execution.

Pros

Working at Finite State has been a really rewarding experience. The company operates in a critically important space, product security for connected devices, and is building a product that genuinely matters. It’s rare to find a team tackling high-impact problems with this level of clarity and execution. The senior leadership team really stands out. There’s a deep level of expertise and a thoughtful, strategic approach that builds a lot of confidence across the company. Leadership is approachable and clearly invested in both the success of the business and the people. There’s also a ton of opportunity. The market is large and growing quickly, and Finite State is in a strong position to lead. It’s a place where you can take ownership, grow quickly, and work on things that have meaningful impact. The culture supports initiative and collaboration, and it’s a great environment if you want to grow your career while continuing to learn.

Cons

Because Finite State spans multiple categories within a rapidly evolving market, positioning can sometimes be challenging. The company is still refining its niche and messaging, which can create occasional ambiguity in how the product is perceived externally.
