I worked at First Data full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Challenging projects

Support from management team to implement difficult changes

Collaborative atmosphere

Strong team environment amongst the rank and file

Pride of working at First Data despite no confidence in senior leadership

Cons

Constant management turnover resulted in no clear vision and a waste of resources

Senior management lacks vision.

Below market compensation. No cash bonus and no cash based long term incentives for employees.

Inability of management to develop employees.

It is amazing the number of employees that were let go from First Data because they weren't high performers that go on to have excellent careers at other companies. First Data values doing as you are told and not rocking the boat instead of being open to new ideas.

First Data takes care of you if you are in a senior management position but at the expense of the rank and file. There always seems to be funds available to pay an executive but money is always unavailable when it comes to taking care of the employees doing the work.

Too many layers of management.

Advice to Management

Until First Data is able to de-leverage management has limited options. Focus on treating employees fairly and compensating them appropriately for all of the work they do.

    Pros

First Data is a stable company, with great products. The pay is fair and the benefits were good.

    Cons

Paths for advancement are few and limited. And changing leadership has created a workplace that changes every year, with new exercises in completely changing how your job is done. It is typical of old school finance companies, filled with contradicting goals, inconsistent feedback, and characterized by inefficient bureaucracy. It's currently in the process of cost-cutting for possibly going public, and, of course, the main way they are trying to become more fiscally responsible is by cutting its investment in its employees.

    Advice to Management

Provide your employees with real opportunities for advancement - don't try to fool them. Cost cut by being innovative, not by sacrificing benefits that are important to your employees.

    Pros

Potential to work with new security tech, if it's not outsourced. Exposure to enterprise level security controls. Nice people for the most part but a few to truly believe they are the one thing standing between hackers and the company.

New CEO is bringing in exceptional talent at high levels.

    Cons

Disparate tech from many acquisitions does not necessarily all work together. Draconian web filtering (news flash, it's 2013, try talking to actual innovative companies and notice that they allow access to social sites and recognize that employees are more productive when they get to do things like listen to pandora). Pervasive mentality that buying a tool will fix or prevent security issues when many could be corrected by changing process and procedures.

Infrastructure and operations talent is lacking expertise in most roles.

New CEO seems unaware of this concept called work/life balance.
Big emphasis on innovation but if you can't keep you revenue generating systems up and running then no amount of innovation is going to save the company.

    Advice to Management

You have and had some good talent, you also have some people that just hang out and cruise by without doing much. Keep the good and purge the bad. Recognize that good talent costs money. Maybe instead of hiring four mediocre people at cost X you hire two superstars.
