I worked at Florida Department of Health full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Really fulfilling work. Awesome leadership. Great benefits. DOH is huge so working conditions can very greatly, especially depending what part of public health you work in. I worked in HIV/AIDS Prevention and loved it. Job was so awesome that I occasionally regret quitting!

Cons

Can get really political. Pay raises are at the discretion of the Legislative branch and not merit based at all. Low pay compared to private sector.

I have been working at Florida Department of Health full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The State of Florida is the best place to work. It is a good honest living. Even Gov. Scott is not so bad. Good benefits. Go into environmental health and you don't really have to work. Some of the programs allow employees to sleep at their desk, walk around to keep from getting tired of reading their latest novel. Especially if you are in radiation.

    Cons

If you think all employees are supposed to stay busy, oh forget that. Only the no-bodies have to work.

    Advice to Management

You need to check computers to see who is surfing the web all day or who's computer is idle all day but is opened. Maybe put something hidden so you can watch employees sleep at their desk.

I have been working at Florida Department of Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A nice property with parks and old oak trees. Located in a safe community. A cafeteria on campus and not too far from eating establishments. There is also a retention pond which is often visited by migrating Canadian geese.

    Cons

Some folks in management may have the knowledge to do their jobs but not the wisdom, ethics, or personal integrity to be in such a position. Overall you may experience career stagnation and you will not gain any marketable skills. You may actually lose skills which are valuable in the private sector. Try to obtain positions with duties which are also valuable in the private sector, such as contract management, HR, or grant writing.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to recognize and combat favortism and discrimination, and not participate in or perpetuate such practices.
