I have been working at Florida International University full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Although it is not a good fame university, it is a vibrant place. Lots of constructions are going on, and departments especial for bio-related are expanding. Good infrastructure, reasonable student, and nice weather.

Cons

Because it is relative new, national recognition may not be great so far. Administrative process for a new employee is kind of slow at least for postdoc.

I worked at Florida International University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large international study body brings an interesting mix of experience and perspective to the classroom.

    Cons

Little freedom to plan or structure my classes. I was required to teach "the program," which required a great expenditure of time for very little pay. Also, there was little support from management when problems with students arose.

    Advice to Management

If you are going to require a specific program be taught, then provide standard assignments and lesson plans so each incoming teacher doesn't have to recreate the same wheel. Also, if you raise the class enrollment cap, raise the per class pay.

I have been working at Florida International University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Hands-on approach that let's you become engaged if you want to be engaged. Good opportunities to get exposure if you are willing to put in the time and effort.

    Cons

Focus on short term profit at the expense of commitment to long term vision of academic excellence. Little respect for work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Reaffirm your commitment to academic excellence and reward those who are committed to it. Walk the walk, don't just talk the talk.
