Pros

You are given the freedom and encouraged to express your ideas and creative side. Very supportive faculty. Fun working environment. Great people, always ready to help and always happy.

Cons

Not always a glamorous job. Going out to remote sites in the everglades, but that's where the research was conducted. Pay could use and increase, but everyone thinks that about every job. There isn't many cons to working at FIU.

Advice to Management

Management and faculty are great. They are very supportive and caring.

    Pros

The students bring unusually strong life experience to their work. They are culturally diverse and think about the larger picture.

    Cons

The management of the university and its infrastructure are incompetent. So much so that there is a strong resistance to bringing in top administration (president, provost, deans, etc.) from outside the university. It is as if the school were afraid of getting "caught" on its incompetence. Because of the incompetence (which is especially evident as they try to graduate), alumni leave angry and do not support the university, which cuts it off from the South Florida community. This makes it hard to connect to the real world. We are a community institution that the community will not support.

    Advice to Management

Promoting from within merely perpetuates the stagnation. Why not try to increase our standing nationally? FIU seems satisfied with being a glorified community college when it is clearly positioned to be a leader in multinational and diverse education.
