I have been working at Friendly's Ice Cream full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

The training is very detailed and easy to learn. It is a very fun place to work, as well as rewarding. Ice cream is always funnnnn.

Cons

Just like any restaurant job it gets busy at time so demand is high therefore high stress. Long hours but breaks are always fulfilled at my location.

Advice to Management

I really do consider myself lucky to work for such a company. There is going to be a lot of changes down the road that really look like they will help with the organization of day to day operations. I feel my job is fun and fulfilling as well. Thanks Friendlys I enjoy being a memory maker.

I worked at Friendly's Ice Cream full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a family-friendly restaurant that doesn't serve alcohol, so as a female server, I felt safe with my customers and rarely experienced harassment.

    Cons

Poor management - do not enforce rules or regulations, generally unpleasant individuals who inflate already bad situations, are not willing to help employees
Bad food - poor quality, unsatisfying food that doesn't come out in a timely manner - this affects your tips
Difficult customer base - typically consist of harried parents who tip poorly and do not treat servers kindly
Bad working conditions - understaffed, heat and air conditioning routinely broken, too many responsibilities forced on servers (seat tables, take orders, prepare salads/deserts/sides, deliver food, handle money transactions out of pocket (aka no cash register), handle take-out orders, clear tables, do sidework, wash dishes), never receive breaks, irregular work schedules
Insufficient wages - make $2.50 per hour + tips which averaged me about $10 per hour. Not good enough for running myself into the ground on a daily basis

    Advice to Management

1.) Design a system that allows servers to take breaks. This may entail your chipping in and covering tables. But nobody should have to work for 13 hours on their feet, constantly answering customer demands, without a break to eat. I feel like this gets normalized in the food industry, but really it is not safe. Proper breaks would ensure quality of service and employee happiness. (2) I understand that for financial reasons, it is sometimes necessary to cut employees, but it is neither fair to the server nor sanitary to have a server handling both food and waste. Divide the labor, so your servers can focus on giving customers a good experience. A "rover" position might be nice... someone who is trained in all areas of the restaurant and helps where the demand is greatest at any given time. (3) Design a system to train senior servers how to train new servers. New servers are not taught a standardized system of methods and therefore quality is very inconsistent. Create a team of certified server trainers who can properly educate your staff so things run more smoothly. Also, 3 training sessions, at 4 hours each, is simply not enough practice. Don't rush new, confused servers onto the floor- it's stressful for them, it's irritating to the experienced servers who have to make time to help, and it looks bad to customers

I worked at Friendly's Ice Cream full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The food is a delicious health nightmare you will crave for many years to come. The floors are easy to carry trays on and plastic soda cups offer less room for accidents. Any possible wage garnishment is hindered by the low wages earned. On a well tipping, 9 hour shift, $120-$200 (in tips) is the miracle that makes your week survivable.

    Cons

As a server, you will work your fingers to the bone for a mere $2.13 hourly plus tips. Breaks are only given when you're not busy which is rare. Essentially, your check will be about $50 bi-weekly. Tips are where the money is, but it's hard to earn them with so many other responsibilities occurring at the same time including, but not limited to: making your table's drinks, salads, sometimes ice cream, sometimes food, and sometimes washing the dishes, and always busing tables which may or may not be your own. You must pay for your own uniform as well. Management, Co-workers, and Customers will drive you insane with their daily dramas!

    Advice to Management

Provide the breaks required by law and Hire quality employees! Servers should not have to complete the duties of other positions. Waiting tables is hard enough without taking on so many other tasks.
