I have been working at GDF SUEZ Energy North America full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Great benefits: 3 weeks vacation plus sick days as soon as you start
Great opportunities to travel and work: GDF Suez Raid, Plant tours, Employee meetings, and other events
Great atmosphere: not very stressful (more European)
Lots of company paid lunches

Cons

The bigger the company the harder it is to change anything on your own. Lots of bureaucracy.
Very department oriented thinking and as a result no clear understanding of the big picture.
Pay could be more competitive.
Training what training?

Advice to Management

Fully invest in training your new employees and you will be rewarded. Get rid of rules and procedures that reduce efficiency and undermine competitiveness.

I have been working at GDF SUEZ Energy North America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits in terms of health care and medical, and good employee stock benefits plan as well as a good 401K plan. Work is easy with no pressure to perform at all, almost a vacation on the job since there is no accountability regarding performance or any sort of guideline on how things are to be done. All groups are different, however the majority views adults as adults, and aren't clock watchers. If you get your work done, then no one really cares what time you arrive or leave or how many days a week you miss and working from home occasionally is allowed. Great vacation package and accruals and flexible working hours (varied hours and half days). Great work/life balance employer.

    Cons

No internal training whatsoever. New employees must fend for themselves in learning the policies and procedures by finding them online and reading them. When new policies, procedures, developments, etc are rolled out, there is still no training. Usually the memo comes over email with a link to read and learn on your own. Poor internal communication among departments. Suez is the largest IPP on the globe, and yet they can't get their heads around implementing state of the art technology to make the company run more efficiently. Employees input their time in sophisticated time management software, however it is not used to its full potential and the company still uses Excel spreadsheets to calculate cross border time. Purchase orders are issued out of Word documents, and Excel spreadsheet templates. Company has sophisticated ERP system is place, however uses it only for accounting, and still uses Exel to cross map the GL of different groups.

    Advice to Management

Spend the money and implement technology! Purchase a good all around ERP system, invest the money in getting it customized for our entire business, and then spend the money to train everyone on the system. Hold everyone accountable for their actions and allow them to make the decisions they are hired to make, instead of getting 100 approvals, and then 50 approval signatures.

    Pros

The company offers good health insurance, flexible work hour (9hours/day and 4.5 days/week to most of the employees), layback environement, Okay bonus, management is open to people moving internally.

    Cons

tight salary bands and once the salary reaches the high end of the band it is very hard to get good raise no matter how well one performs. That resulted in high turnover rate in the areas that SUEZ pay below the market.

    Advice to Management

People is your most important asset! Turnover cost is high so to keep your best performers and save $ you will need to pay competitive salary and enforce positive selection.
