I have been working at GE Aviation as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

-provided plenty of opportunities to meet various department heads
-real work provided makes for contributions to current work
-intern salary very good for first-time co-op ($19.25/hr prior to taxes)
-young co-op crowd makes for potential opportunity to team assignments

Cons

-didn't see where my work went further down the line
-lack of teaming initiatives led to slight lack of motivation
-office atmosphere and data tracking systems from 1990 and older
-behind a computer more than i'd like

Advice to Management

-learn up on some newer technologies and talk to managers about legitimate changes
-reduce cycle time on unnecessary road blocks, including systems access and shop floor breaks
-provide for more team meetings in order to best communicate, identify, and create deliverables

I worked at GE Aviation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn and work on latest aircraft

    Cons

    High pressure, sluggish management, click-ey

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees, allow some personal life, listen to your employees when they suggest that something will take a certain amount of time. Just because the PM agrees to an unreasonable schedule, does not make it an achievable one.

I have been working at GE Aviation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Great products and market leader
    - Great opportunities if you move early
    - Great management training ground
    - Plenty of work

    Cons

    - Healthcare coverage was changed dramatically and with no warning in 2010
    - Pay is below par
    - If you decide to specialize and do not move in a position early on, you will be penalized unless you can play the networking game
    - "You own your career" mentality not backed up by realistic tools or help from HR
    - Employee ratings are forced to fit a set percentage of bad, ok, superior
    - Ratings depend too much on whim; "Growth values" used as a fudge factor to place you where HR thinks you should be
    - First line managers have little control over compensation or ratings

    Advice to Management

Value your long term employees that are experts. Don't insist on hiring the best and brightest but pay them the worst. De-emphasize PhDs.
