I worked at GameStop full-time

Pros

Great product, exciting environement during big game release, great job for someone in their early 20s with no family or need for a life outside of Xbox Live till 3am.

Cons

No payroll. Company expects salaried manager to handle the workload of 3 people. Many of the task required by corporate cannot be done during store hours as you are constantly alone for the majority of your shift, requiring you to work long into the night or early mornings. If you can't even step out back to urinate for 3 minutes, how can you be expected to count all the 360 games?

Advice to Management

Reduce tasks or alot more payroll to help out overworked and underpaid store managers.

I have been working at GameStop part-time

    Pros

Renting games, working with friends, small discount, first to get new games and systems.

    Cons

High turn-over in management, dress-code doesn't make sense for women, minimum wage pay.

    Advice to Management

Keep your district managers happy. This will trickle down to stores.

I have been working at GameStop full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You generally sell fun so it's easy to make many customers smile.

    Cons

You often work long shifts alone without the ability to take a break or use the restroom. Managers are expected to complete marketing after hours, attend other store after hours inventories up to 4 times a month, "optional" meetings (which DMs expect you to attend even on your day off), and take conference calls whether you're on shift or not on top of the minimum 44 hours SMs are required to work. Job responsibilities are increased exponentially while pay, which is assessed yearly by your equally hard working DM, only increases slightly even with excellent review scores.

    Advice to Management

Management is fighting the hard fight to stay profitable in this competitive market. The lack of new home consoles forces them to expand their product line to products not associated with GameStop such as phones, tablets, music players, etc. I give them credit for making it work.

I think competitive pay (considering the position requires far more than most people expect) would attract a higher level of talent and would make everyone's job's more efficient and less clumsy. Many people looking for a career in retail ignore GameStop because they know the pay is below average for a company as profitable as it is. Recruiting someone with above average experience is difficult because they know they can make much more doing less at Target, Apple, and even the dying Best Buy.

Show your employees that you appreciate them not with flare pins, printed awards, and increased coaching work load (because they want you to teach others how you're succeeding) but with better pay that matches the increased earning you provided above your peers.
