Pros

It's a big company with lots of resources (relative to other outlets), a good attitude toward employees, and an eye toward keeping and promoting young employees.

Cons

The company is making cutbacks throughout its newspaper division, so the future of any reporter within the company feels somewhat uncertain. You just hope if you do a good job, you'll be able to stick around.

    Pros

I wish I could think of one. Maybe if they had jumped onto and effectively promoted their online presence much earlier than they did they wouldn't be bleeding from a thousand cuts. Good people on the editorial side.

    Cons

I can only give feedback on my time in mid-size markets in the Mid-Atlantic, but if you like working for what I assume were decent salespeople who have been promoted into a level of incompetency (i.e. sales managers,) being forced into unproductivity with needless "sales and goal meetings," no training, descending account lists, print products and packages no one would be interested in unless you're in that rare market where broadcast doesn't dominate, unrealsitic sales budgets, horrible morale, and bad marketing, etc., then Gannett is the company for you.

    Advice to Management

Send experienced (not your recent MBA newbies) corporate level advertising sales and marketing auditors into all of your failing markets to audit your local managers. If Gannett, as a corporation, knows how to compete, you should be shocked with what you'll discover.

    Pros

builds your resume. notable brands. Pay was good and experience was helpful in gaining my next job. good benefits overall.

    Cons

linear thinking. newspaper thought still runs the company direction - though its a dying industry. management (executive) is the epitome of 'ivory tower'.

    Advice to Management

Realize that it takes more than a few VPs/Directors to formulate a strategy. Rebranding your logo is nice, but a waste of time. Focus on actionable, measurable growth opportunities.
