I worked at Gannett full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Large company, with a national impact. No matter what your function, the news business is always busy, many opportunities to learn.

Cons

The print business is contracting, makes for a lot of morale problems. If you're considering taking a job here, make sure it is very involved in non-print divisions.

I have been working at Gannett full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great Base Salary. Local Territory.

    Cons

No ramp up period for goals in a declining print market with tons of advertising competition. If you don't meet your goal on your first time out you are automatically placed on a PIP. Tons of training material with little instruction.

    Advice to Management

Stop wasting money training people and not giving them a chance to perform. If a new rep came on board and did just as much or more than a senior rep does, why would you keep your senior reps? It took time for your senior reps to perfect their skills, just as it is going to take time for a new rep.

I worked at Gannett full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

None. Really. Some good-hearted non-management people that you will try to stay afloat with. Morale has been on a steady decline for years.

    Cons

65+ hour weeks with no overtime making less than $45k. The former CEO demanded unpaid furloughs every 6-weeks for more than a year company-wide... then gave himself a multi-million dollar bonus for saving the stockholders some money.

    Advice to Management

Stop abusing newsroom personnel by demanding they work long hours while threatening they will be fired if they don't comply. Pay a living wage. Separate or sell off the unprofitable newspaper division from the broadcast side.
