I worked at Gannett full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Worked with some very good people who wanted to do a great job but were often hindered by management from doing so.

Cons

Strategy is no longer locally controlled -- it is all driven by corporate mandates and constantly changing priorities. Everything is driven by the almighty dollar and not by doing what is right. Quality has suffered greatly in the products and services due to constant cost-cutting. Everyone is paranoid about losing their jobs. Constantly hear from dissatisfied readers, subscribers and businesses about how the company has gone downhill.

Advice to Management

Respect and value your employees more. Get out and meet the local businesses and decision-makers. Get a grip on reality. Unfortunately you are torn between making the right decisions and doing what corporate tells you to do. The situation will only get worse so get out while you can still look at yourself in the mirror.

I have been working at Gannett full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Deeper pockets with Gannett. Bigger pool of content sharing. Lots of talented people at the station. Fun to work with an exceptional group that has been number one in the ratings for years.

    Cons

Belo was better. Before the buy out Gannett said it would be better together and their wouldn't be a lot of change. A majority of the graphic designers and public service producers at the former Belo stations have been laid off. Our GM did get them a good severance package. Gannett thinks it's okay to make fewer people work harder. Our benefits package are going to take a hit. It feels like all they care about is their bottom line. It doesn't matter how successful your station has been. A lot of people are wondering what the next round of layoffs will be.

    Advice to Management

Let your employees work. They are smart. Too much micromanaging flat out drives your employees nuts

    Pros

Strong company growth. Advancement can happen quickly. Strong name-recognition.

    Cons

Very "top-down" management style. Management doesnt value employee input.

    Advice to Management

Listen to experienced employees; dont treat them like they dont have some good input
