I have been working at Gap part-time

Pros

The discount is awesome, the people are mostly really cool, and the growth opportunity is there if you really want it.

Cons

Some of the associates can be such duds.. That could be because some people half-care about the job.

I worked at Gap full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Challenging, offers solid growth opportunities, filled with inspiring, dedicated employees focused on teamwork, great benefits, solid training, well organized systems with clear policies and procedures, pays well.

    Cons

Long hours, poor support from upper management, limited payroll resources, lacks support from the human resources department, limits its employees ability to properly perform their jobs, the standards expected by the company lacks consistency across all positions.

    Advice to Management

This may be specific to the San Francisco Region (Corporate HQ), but politics often gets in the way of job performance. The higher standard is worthy of being lived up to, but it needs to be clearly communicated and the appropriate level of support should be provided to achieve it.

I worked at Gap part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great discount on awesome clothing. Make a lot of friends. Earn reward points for doing a good job.

    Cons

It honestly depends on your store manager, because his or her attitude definitely affects everyone. Management gets the heat from the store manager if something did not go over well, and the employees get the heat from the management. The pay really sucks for all of the tasks you are doing - not only could you be a cashier, but you could be apart of the shipping team, markdown team, promos and recovery. It's a lot of work for close to minimum wage. Favoritism was definitely shown and there was no way of moving up, it seems like a lot of the managers were from different stores or brought in outside of the company. High turnover when it came to employees and managers. Seen a lot of managers change emotionally because of this job, moreso the store manager.

    Advice to Management

Take note on how you treat your employees, it definitely shows when you're upset about something and it's not right to take it out on others! Also, pay attention to your star employees, they should be the ones getting manager positions.
