I have been working at Gap (More than 5 years)

Pros

The experience you learn as a visual merchandiser will be amazing. You will learn things that will help you later on in your career.
As a manager, you learn different ways into how to manage your business and employees.
Great healthcare benefits, tuition reimbursement, etc...

Cons

The company is not very rewarding to management or associates. It is hard to move up within the company. Does pay better than other companies, but does not pay enough for the amount of work given.

Advice to Management

It is very political as far as advancing in the company. Must be very competitive. Have a lot of patience.

I worked at Gap full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

decent pay, decent hours, new office and cafeteria

    Cons

horrible management, unfair HR, horrible qualities to work with, too many levels of management to make a good business judgment, hard to get a raise or promotion unless you switch positions completely or leave the company completely

    Advice to Management

stick with 1 idea longer then 1 season, treat your employees better

I have been working at Gap part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-flexible scheduling, excellent as a side job.
    -generally friendly coworkers.
    -love my employee discount.
-Personal pressure to open GapCards has lessened considerably compared to few years ago.
-Styles have improved considerably over the past few seasons, love the direction the line is going.
-Management is generally receptive to employee concerns.
    -Easy to transfer stores.

    Cons

-monotonous work, but hey, it's retail.
-If you work at a larger location, you'll kind of feel like a worker bee.
-There doesn't seem to be much mentorship for younger managers who need it...many seem to have little prior leadership experience and end up unnecessarily micromanaging.
-No raises for associates it seems, regardless of seniority, performance, or increased product knowledge.

    Advice to Management

(spec. advice to corporate management rather than store:)
-Discouraging any sort of friendship or social media connection external to the company between managers and employees is a little weird and feels overly-intrusive.
-The corporate-issued scripts managers must read from during store meetings are kind of a joke and come across as condescending. Yes it's retail, but yes, most associates are college students or graduates.
