I have been working at Gartner full-time

Pros

- You are allowed huge portions of autonomy, which demands discipline
- Intellectual, almost academic atmosphere. You are surrounded by thought-leaders.
- Due to the strong brand, you get access to c-level at the clientele you are serving
- Working from home

Cons

- Processes have not caught up with Gartner now being a large-cap organisation. Ironically, since we are supposed to advise others on IT - our systems are terrible
- Workload can in periods be overwhelming - be prepared to erase boundaries between work and life.
- More and more metrics-driven, sometimes causing people to chase perverted incentives not good for the company

Advice to Management

- see the person beyond the metrics

I have been working at Gartner full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Access to everyone, you have to turn down information and meetings; intelligent colleagues in order to discuss trends with; wide distribution of your research; freedom to create and explore; understanding managers (generally) who understand your needs

    Cons

Heavy demands, not enough hours in the day; difficult to maintain work/life balance; managers aren't given a lot of room to manage; changing strategies; senior management that knows it needs to make changes to work needs, but doesn't; process, process, process; constantly changing strategies and initiatives; senior product people that suck

    Advice to Management

Take care of the good people, the ones you know can help the company; cut out favoritism and corp. politics; reward and incent those that execute

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Gartner full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working with a market leader, learning enormous amounts about how to manage, conduct business, interact with other companies

    Cons

Gradual migration of responsibility to a few key members of a central US-based cabal. Terrible politics. Appraisal system designed to demotivate. Constant focus on measurement irrespective of whether it was a sensible thing to measure or not.

    Advice to Management

Spread real responsibility and genuine decision making around the world. Drop the stack ranking for appraisals as it has been wholly debunked on numerous occasions.
