I worked at Gartner full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Gartner has a very strong name and reputation in the tech community, mostly from its research, on-the-spot analysis in the media, and the over-the-top events it hosts for customers.

    Cons

Research is the king of everything that is done at Gartner. Essentially everything else is designed to support the growth and sales of research product. Consulting is a "third tier" activity that is supposed to amplify research for its customers, but since it costs more to produce consulting than research, it is often left to make its own way. There is no clear progression for staff, as it is a firm designed much more for a seasoned professional than junior staff. They do not offer training opportunities to staff, there is no clear mentoring, and no real supervision, except on a project by project basis.

    Advice to Management

Consider investment in real human capital programs for staff across the board. Develop objective career progression ladders, and establish a true staff management structure rather than the existing counselor program.

    Pros

Access to technology analysts with either no actual business experence or highly conceptualized tech-speak.

Learn to write, behave and speak as a Gartner expert. Learn the power of Magic and realize that clients never lose their job picking Gartner.

    Cons

False projections of professionalism. Behavior is coated with pounds of IQ residue.

Customer retention is managed by FUD,

A basic sweat shop.. Vulture capitalists own the place therefore profit , and margin growth is superior to human growth. They coined the term "human capital".

    Advice to Management

Great rid of Silver Lake and increase EPS via real cstomer satisfaction.
