I worked at Genentech full-time (More than a year)

Pros

One of the best benefit package around, and really good people (staff) to work with. Most of the time the work is fast paced and interesting.

Cons

Lots of politics, favoritism, work comes first - personal life second. Always felt like there was a game being played by upper management, but even as a supervisor, I didn't get a copy of the rules.

For being in the bay area, the pay doesn't really compensate for the cost of living, the nature of the work, and the stress one has to endure.

Exciting mission, smart people, good benefits, work hard play hard environment

    Cons

After being bought by Roche became just another big pharma company

    Advice to Management

Revive the values that made Genentech a great company or risk losing your best employees

I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to learn international regulatory agency requirements and globalization. Genentech benefits (except for salary and bonus) still intact.

    Cons

Management (middle and upper) is mired in politics and rhetoric. Workload is exponentially increased, technical infrastructure deteriorated significantly with Roche systems, and people just cannot get anything done without staying up all night to contact international counterparts.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of project managers who focus only on timelines, and neither understand the project nor care about quality. Increase resources to get projects done successfully.
