I have been working at Genentech full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

great science and products, both on the market and in the pipeline. honorable mission statement and focus on patients. great facilities and infrastructure: nice offices, cafeteria, shuttles, etc.

Cons

compensation and benefits are reasonable, but not as competitive as they'd let you believe...departmental differences are vast; some departments are paid much better than others, though the job levels/responsibilities are similar...terrible politics and bureaucracy inhibits even the "best" employees in performing their job well; constantly having to jump through hoops to accomplish goals. however, those who play the games well and know how to manipulate management shine and are recognized on a daily basis. people learn to just do "enough" to get by, and become complacent.

senior management is inefficient and ineffective in policy making and decisions, and often extremely out-of-touch of the group dynamic of their group. publicly, they praise the spirit of collaboration, when in fact, people are incredibly selfish and always trying to hide information to cover their behind. very little developmental opportunities, unless you get lucky with a great manager...

Advice to Management

managers should be required to take training courses on managing people before becoming a manager. individual contributors who performs a job well may not be a good people/project manager. have more candid conversations with those "in the trenches," and not just listen to those closest to you. most of all, listen to feedback, both positive and negative, and take actions accordingly; you are in a position of authority to reward hard work, but to also address issues.
