I have been working at Genentech as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

GREAT experience, lot's of fun and challenging. People stay extremely spportive and really want you to do your best.
People around you are all very smart.

    Cons

People expect a lot from you and you really need to be focused the entire time, despite goodies and distractions. They are generally passive aggressive, so you should be aware that if you haven't met expectations, management be very unhappy with you, even if they won't say it explicitly.

    Advice to Management

Good Job, means "Good Job", not see you later!

I worked at Genentech full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

gRide program allows you to be productive on WiFi enabled buses and arrive at work without the stress of driving in Bay area traffic

    Cons

The company has less than 3% merit increase budget which does not even keep up with ithe cost of living in the Bay area. Genentech does calibration on a curve and force fits employee performance ratings so it is difficult to be

    Advice to Management

Allow line managers to participate in the calibration process rather than senior management just force fitting everyone's performance ratings to meet their less than adequate budget in a vaccum. Revise your performance management and compensation system to actually reward performance.
