I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

The compensation is pretty good.
You work with very talented people.

Cons

Unfortunately the company as a whole is fairly bureaucratic, but this is typical of a government contractor.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The folks here are friendly, helpful, and enjoyable to work with. There's a great culture, even without a deep immersion. If you're stuck or need to reach out for help outside of your project scope, I've learned that people are invariably willing to assist.

    Cons

The current economic crises have taken a toll on compensation and morale. In early 2013 Senior Management nixed merit-based pay increases for at least this year, and in 2012 they reduced PTO earnings. The rate of employment attrition is staggeringly high, but fresh college graduates are being hired semi-annually. I don't have the impression that there is any hope for real career progression.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. I had a flexible schedule, including 9/80 biweekly work hours. Great pay. Willing to promote quickly.

    Cons

Not a great place to start a career as you won't get much guidance. It's great for independent workers in the middle of their career who can assert themselves and achieve results. They really need better business sense to be better able to weather the downturns in the market.

    Advice to Management

Change assessments to include personal and professional goals. Quit shoe-horning the topics of those goals and give clear direction to management to make sure that goals really are stretching, measurable, etc. In my experience most employees made this a 2 hour task per year, max, which is not enough to get honest feedback and being thoughtful about
