"Losing good engineers."

Pros

The engineers that are there are good, work hard and put out good products.

Cons

In transition from a large contract and not managing it well. Management stripped good engineers away, froze or downgraded benefits and is now dealing with a large exodus of good experienced engineers. Management focus on short term bonuses and profits with no thought for the future.

Advice to Management

Change. You've lost good people by going for a very shortsighted bottom line.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time

    Pros

-It is important work, and it is nice to know you are making a difference for the military.
-The schedule is very flexible and every other Friday is off.
-You have the ability to work from home when necessary.
-The benefits are decent for people who already spend a lot on health.
-The compensation is good (at first).
-There are lots of charity events and opportunities for networking and volunteer work.
-Managers have two performance reviews/discussions a year instead of just one to get some feedback.

    Cons

-The benefits seem to get worse each year.
-You had better be happy with your original salary, because raises are a joke unless you are promoted.
-There was a huge amount of turnover in my department which completely changed the work environment.
-Management doesn't seem to care about the lower level employees; it's all about maximizing profits.
-Contractors seem to take the place of full time employees, putting much more strain on the employees who stick around.

    Advice to Management

-It's cheaper to keep an employee than hire a new one, so stop being stingy with raises and bonuses.
-Make your employees feel like their work is appreciated.
-Communicate better so we don't always feel completely in the dark about important issues
