I have been working at General Dynamics NASSCO full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

The Government and commercial customers are generally very satisfied with our work. Relaxed dress code. Upper management is effective. Decent pay.

Cons

The current president is volatile - a great leader but an awful boss. As he is a grad of Maine Maritime, he recruits lots of interns (PDPs for Professional Development Program) from there, and they are the chosen ones who can leap up the ladder with little experience, while others are less likely to succeed. The Government works onsite; full of idiots.

Advice to Management

Stop thinking that a 25 year old from MM is automatically a better leader than someone who has worked at NASSCO for longer and proven themselves.

    Pros

Supportive management staff, high profile contracts, and unique work environment make NASSCO one of the best places to work in San Diego. Plus you are on the water all of the time!

    Cons

Limited compensation package and educational assistance. However if you perform in your job and let your voice be heard this should not be an issue.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Christmas shut down allows for extended vacay
My boss does not micro manage

    Cons

1950's mentality is archaic; women are definetly not given equal opportunity. If you are not a male with maritime academy or military experience, you will not be considered for advancement, no matter your skills and experience

    Advice to Management

Extensively relying on the old buddy system to hire alienates good talent. Women also have a brain and can do a great job as much as the middle-aged men, and in some cases even better
