Pros

Subject matter experts in Geo Enabled transportation systems. Allow some flexibility in working from home.

Cons

Excessive meetings, micromanagement, questionable technical competence of Project Managers and more senior levels. Low level of compensation as compared to market rates. Allow employees little leeway in their job or schedule and little independence in how they perform it..
GD is penny wise and dollar foolish. It watches employee expenses very closely and denies many expenses that would be deemed fair by neutral observers.

Company tends to focus on software independence at the expense of their
customers. They take on jobs that can be done with 1/3 of he staff and 1/4 of the time and budget. By using "open" tools (not really open) they have to keep reinventing the wheel thus costing their customers a bundle.
Also, they alienate experienced and capable creating a high turnover of employees. They then try to pass the costs for their mistakes on to their customers.

Advice to Management

Fire yourselves and get a new crew in, but don't hire them yourselves, get some honest high level help from very competent Human Resources professionals. Give yourself a modest golden parachute and go home. You will be doing the company a great favor.

    Pros

GeoDecisions has a wide range of GIS applications which gives you the opportunity to work with some really powerful technologies on cool projects. Management is willing to push towards the cutting edge, which as a developer is a big positive because you are able to work with the latest technologies and products. There are many opportunities to learn and your input is always valued.

    Cons

Working in a government transportation agencies can be cumbersome, but Geo has done a good job of pulling them into new technologies.
The SDLC can be a big disjointed, but new adoption of new software has helped greatly.

    Advice to Management

Keep moving forward and cultivating the technical/product portfolio.

I have been working at GeoDecisions full-time

    Pros

Slowly improving work flexibility (but still terribly outdated for a tech company)

There is literally 1 effective person in upper management who is in place. You'll have to luck out by falling into the right group that works on the local government projects.

    Cons

    Pay & Compensation are poor
Benefits are outdated to what most people under the age of 50 are looking for
Top level leadership is sort of a joke
Lack of flexibility in both working culture/environment as well as implementing proper processes, standards and tech/tools for such a small company

There are a few decent technical minds at this company, but unfortunately the tech team gets over committed by the sales teams and the worst project managers I've ever worked with in my career. The PMs have no idea or understanding about managing scope or the client, mostly because they only have a few big clients that pay the bills, and are afraid if they go away that they'll lose significant chunks of their business.

But all of that starts at the very top with sales guys and leadership allowing it to happen again and again. The sales teams constantly over promise without understanding process, management or delivery impacts.

    Advice to Management

Management needs complete replacement. I used to think that the VPs could be coached, but time and time again they've proven to be inadequate. It's hard to understand why they are still in place when revenues either decline or stay stagnant in a booming tech sector.

Update your compensation and benefits packages to reflect what the industry is looking for.

Don't hire good talent until you fix the management issues, because until then you'll just lose more and more of your best workers.
