I have been working at Gilead Sciences as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

This a great company to work for if you are passionate about patients with life-threatening illnesses and want to earn a great salary. The company is renowned for doing twice the work with 1/2 the employees and, as a result, has an exploding stock price with a highly anticipated pipeline. The corporate culture is really fun depending on the department you are working in. The newer departments (i.e. Oncology) are young and excited to be working with each other. Other older departments are really good at what they do, but don't really enjoy spending time together. Additionally, the executives take great pride in science and patient care. They are all very keen scientists with solid academic backgrounds, which means that they make smart decisions that, ultimately doesn't compromise patient treatment. The executives also try hard to make sure their employees (who are working very hard) are happy by offering frequent company-wide gifts and events.

Cons

The company was founded in the late 80's, which means that a lot of the systems that are in place, are VERY obsolete. A lot of the work could be completed much faster if current technologies (ie filesharing + telecommunication) were implemented. Also, the fact that the company runs "lean" means that employees are very overworked and lack a work-life balance. That being said, there isn't very much room for career growth if you start from the bottom. Many of the employees that have been there for >2 years end up moving to a different organization because they can't get promoted.

Advice to Management

-Remain focused on cutting edge science that helps patients, you're doing great!
-Implement newer technology systems by rehiring a new IT department
-Expand career growth opportunities
