I worked at Goodwill part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Relatively decent pay for no necessary experience, see lots of interesting things, decent amount of freedom at work, customers are usually friendly, and you are doing something valuable for people.

Cons

Management was rough to deal with at times (ultimately why I left), and the few customers that are bad are really bad.

Advice to Management

Go easy on the younger employees who are actually working hard for you. Just because we are young doesn't mean you can push us around so much. Also, if you are a manager at a new store, don't tell long term employees that they don't know what they are doing. Each store has a different rate of business.

I worked at Goodwill full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work schedule, rewarding work, every day is different, making a difference in peoples lives.

    Cons

Very results demanding in highly competitive economy. Need to place at least 5 individuals a week when the job market is not moving. Senior management does not nurture career growth. Directors and vice presidents are not understanding of market conditions. No real advancement opportunity.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your job developers. They are more aware of what the market is like and what real expectations should be.

I worked at Goodwill as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Everyone was helpful and kind
Executives and managers were very available
    Not too stressful at all

    Cons

    Extremely poor management
    Environment was okay
    Low wages

    Advice to Management

The environment is sometimes TOO laid back and rules aren't being enforced. Employees would a lot of times not show up to work and they would have too many get away cards. This doesn't promote efficiency, positive work environment, and morale is low. Also, Goodwill needs to stop hiring managers that are not ready to take that role.
