I worked at Group Health full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Working in healthcare provides you the satisfaction of helping others lead healthier lives.
Group Health is unique in that you get to work in an environment of both healthcare and insurance.

Cons

Employees are under the constant threat of layoffs. Employees are not collaborating but instead competing with one another. Management is doing what's best for their own personal gains and not necessarily the employees or the company.

No time for professional development.

Advice to Management

Don't try to be the best at everything and focus on a few things that are core to GHC values.

"Odd culture. No longer the innovative, thought leader in health care that it once was."

I have been working at Group Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Mission is important and most employees care about the work and the patients.
    Nice working environment at headquarters.
Generally nice people to work with.
    Decent pay and benefits.

    Cons

Much of staff has been there forever and believes GH is still the special, unique, innovative health care model of the future. That may have been true before the ACA but the company hasn't adapted enough in past few years.
Leadership is sluggish and reactive, doesn't see the forest for the trees.
Culture is overly formal and generally odd in how different levels in the org interact (or don't). Suit and tie everyday, really?
There is a disturbing tolerance for bullying and unnecessary behind the back politics.
Heavy focus on cost savings has reduced opportunities for investing in development and training for employees.
While medical and dental coverage is OK for typical company, competitors like Premera offer 100% paid coverage, which GH used to offer but no longer does.

    Advice to Management

There is a core group of innovators across the company that would like to change things and improve with more focus on the "business", but they aren't being allowed to succeed or push their agenda because they haven't been there 15+ years. Listen to them. Trustees seem irrelevant; they should take on a bigger role in managing the executive team.
